YOU'RE hitting into the teeth of a strong wind on a 121m hole with a water carry, using a three wood. What chance of a hole-in-one?

Next to none, you would think, but Mackay Golf Club's Joan Edmonds defied the odds to sink her first ace on Saturday.

aI used the three wood because I'm not a long hitter and the wind was blowing a fair bit,a she said.

aIt's a hole I often have difficulty with, but on Saturday the ball hit the green, rolled up and fell into the hole.

aI didn't actually see it go in. After I saw it go on the green, I bent over and picked up my tee and one of the other ladies in my group said aIt's gone in the hole'.a

Although her 100/77 nett wasn't good enough to win the competition, which went to a 73 nett round, she was happy.

aThat was just my one good shot for the day. …
