MOST IMPROVED faces the first test of his Classic pretensions in the Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes (4.10) and can rise to the occasion at Newmarket.

The one-mile heat has a lamentable record of producing 2000 Guineas winners in recent years, with Haafhd the last victor to go on to Classic glory back in 2004.

However, while the result should perhaps be viewed with caution, no such reticence is needed in backing Most Improved for the Group Three contest.

Brian Meehan's charge is officially 1lb or more better than each of his 12 rivals following a juvenile campaign that was capped by a narrow third in the Dewhurst.

His inexperience possibly cost him when beaten a short-head on his racecourse bow but he made no mistake next time when he was a clear-cut fivelength victor.

That run was enough to prompt Meehan to up him to Group One level in the Dewhurst and while only third, Most Improved lost little in his narrow defeat at the hands of two more experienced rivals.

It is obviously impossible to know if he has trained on at this stage, but with Kieren Fallon committed to ride for the whole of this term, he has clearly been showing something at home.

A modicum of confidence in Mickdaam should not be misplaced as he tackles the pounds 250,000 Tattersalls Millions 3-Y-O Trophy (3.00).

A York maiden winner for Richard Fahey last year, Mickdaam was then transferred to the care of Mike de Kock for a Dubai campaign that marked him out as a decent prospect.

A couple of fair runs at Meydan were supplemented by a win in March and it was no surprise to see him show up well in the UAE Derby.

While only fourth behind Daddy Long Legs, Mickdaam started slowly before meeting with some tight spots three furlongs out.

He stayed on well but almost certainly would have finished closer granted more luck in running. …
