TEESSIDE Winner: Double Eleven, Middlesbrough Double Eleven was born out of Rockstar Leeds, the studio responsible for games such as Grand Theft Auto.

Developers Lee Hutchinson and Matt Shepcar decided to set up their own studio, and have since worked on projects such as LittleBigPlanet for Sony's new mobile games device, the PS Vita. s

Double Eleven attracts talent from all over the world to its home in Middlesbrough, and signed a deal latest year to develop games exclusively for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

TYNESIDE AND NORTHUMBERLAND Winner: SCM Pharma, Cramlington STYNESIDE WINNER Jonathan Waters of Hay & Kilner with Diane Sharp SCM Pharma CM Pharma is a contract drug manufacturing organisation that makes novel, difficult and dangerous drugs. Last year its sales grow by 70% to clear pounds 4m. Its record year saw it boost export sales from pounds 700,000 to more than pounds 2m, while it increased its workforce from 58 to 80. SCM picked up a second facility to focus on early stage drug development projects, and invested pounds 600,000 in its headquarters to handle its extra workload. Runners up IT Professional Services, Gateshead: ITPS offers a range of ICT services to public and private organisations. It can act as a company's IT department, or work with the team that's already in place. Its additional services include virtualisation, data storage, disaster recovery and network security. Route Monkey, Gateshead: The transport industry benefits from specialist software services thanks to Route Monkey. The firm's software allows delivery vehicles to choose the most efficient routes, reducing fuel costs and mileage.

DURHAM AND WEARSIDE Winner: SaleCycle, Houghton-le-Spring SaleCycle is the largest online "cart recovery provider" in the world. Its software allows online retailers to identify customers who have abandoned their shopping carts, so that they can contact them via personalised email and encourage them to complete the purchase.

SaleCycle sells to the UK, France, Spain and the Nordic countries, and recently opened an office in the USA. SaleCycle has helped to recover more than pounds 15m worth of abandoned shopping carts since it was launched.

Runners up Complement Genomics t/a dadcheck, Sunderland: A DNA testing company that offers services to the academic and commercial bioscience sector. It handles molecular biology research services, such as DNA sequencing and genotyping for clinical trials studies. …
