Track Upgrades Vital for Survival; Other Clubs Could Learn from Wyong

Article excerpt

ONCE upon a time Wyong race course was the worst wet-weather track in Australia.

It was built on a swamp and if a race meeting was scheduled and clouds appeared in the sky the meeting was off.

Then the club embarked on an extensive and expensive under-track drainage system and Wyong is now one of the nation's best wet-weather tracks.

Last Thursday a horse called The Black Ferri, from the Grant Allard yard at Gosford, won a maiden on debut and ran a class record on a track rated a heavy 10.

That came after more than 100mm of rain had fallen over the track in the previous 48 hours.

While stewards quickly upgraded the track to a heavy nine, jockeys said it was much better than that.

It is that sort of expensive but necessary drainage system we need at Ballina, Lismore and Casino to avoid yet another washout like that experienced yesterday.

Ballina knew early in the week it would not be able to race and Lismore was too wet, so the decision was made to go to Casino.

Casino looked promising until the rain came and while chief steward Mark Holloway left it until the last possible moment to make a decision, in the hope that a miracle might occur, it was odds on that the meeting was going to be called off.

Everyone is a loser a owners, trainers, jockeys, clubs and the myriad other workers who make up the racing industry.

We live and race in a high rainfall area, so hopefully Racing NSW will not waste any time with its track upgrading program and will provide enough money so the job at each track can be done properly.

The Ballina meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 24, at Casino.

Black book tip

If you have a spare line in your little black book under the heading T, write in The Black Ferri as a horse to follow.

He is a stunning type by Dubleo and his ability matches his looks.

Easter wasted

What was Racing NSW thinking about when it programmed the schedule over the four-day Easter period? …
