TWEED Shire Council general manager Mike Rayner will leave the council on Friday with few regrets after 30 years in its service.

aThere haven't been many days where I didn't want to come to work,a Mr Rayner said.

aI will miss the position. Something I have realised over the past few days is that I will miss a lot of the people here.a

Mr Rayner was always there for council and community access meetings, ready to defend staff.

aI have a very strong view that we have a high performing organisation,a he said. aWhen you get members of the community, who are ill informed, attacking council staff in a public forum well you just can't let that go.a

He said a lot had changed with the council since he started in June 1982 as a water supply engineer.

aOne thing I would say about council was that we have been able to keep up the infrastructure,a he said. aGrowth is not a new thing. In the period between 1976 and 1981 the population of the Tweed rose from 26,000 to 39,000. …
