CITY of Newcastle enjoyed medal success at the City of Leeds National Qualifying Meet.

In the competition for 11 to 14-years-olds, 12-year-old Miriam Jessett led the way with a hat-trick of victories.

She swept through the freestyle events with 2-17.57 for 200m, 4-50.49 for 400m and 1-02.80 for the 100m sprint.

To add to this haul she also took silver in the 100m backstroke with 1-13.08.

Fourteen-year-old Lucy Howarth won two gold medals.

Swimmers were given a rare opportunity in modernage group competition to experience the atmosphere of an event staged with finals - and Howarth excelled by winning the 100m breaststroke in 1-22.94 and the 200m race in 2-56.86.

Victoria Hall triumphed in the 13 years' 200m breaststroke in 2-49.08.

Jessica Hardingham collected another gold for the girls in the 12 years' 200m backstroke with 2-35.59.

Two Newcastle boys also collected golds in the 13 years' breaststroke events. …
