Rates, Roads Hot Topics; One Mayoral Candidate Promises to Donate 20% of His Salary

ESCALATING rates, disappearing jobs, roads, and revitalising the Mary Valley and Gympie CBD were among the key issues raised at a public forum of mayoral and Division 4 candidates in the Gympie Civic Centre on Monday night.

All four mayoral candidates and all but two of the seven councillor candidates gave a short speech to a crowd of about 70, and then took questions from the floor.

A hydrotherapy pool in Gympie's proposed multi-million dollar aquatic centre was another hot topic, with multi-pronged questions from committee president Anita Femiano put to every candidate.

Most said they supported it.

Mayoral candidate Snow Meredith was the first to speak and said he would put a hold on rates if elected, and donate 20% of his mayoral salary. He said he would push for more doctors and let pensioners cut land off for their families.

George Groth said he wanted to create jobs by drawing more businesses to the area and bringing functions and events to Gympie. …
