Pillars of Arts Award Honors the Haskells

The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville honored Preston and Joan Haskell for their contributions to MOCA and to the arts in general in Jacksonville with the 2012 Pillars of the Arts Award at a black-tie event Saturday. MOCA last gave the award in 2005 to Arthur and Teresa Milam.

During the Pillars of the Arts ceremony, MOCA director Marcelle Polednik announced the creation of the Preston H. Haskell Exhibition Fund to support excellence in exhibitions of contemporary art at MOCA Jacksonville. Gifts to the fund already total more than $130,000 and were provided by The Haskell Co., Baptist Health, Celso Gonzalez-Falla and Sondra Gilman, Arthur and Teresa Milam, Russell and Joanie Newton and Howard Serkin.

WIND ENSEMBLE CONCERT AT JU

The Jacksonville University College of Fine Arts will present the JU Wind Ensemble's spring concert at 3 p.m. today in Terry Concert Hall on the JU campus, 2800 University Blvd. N.

The 30-member student group, conducted by Artie Clifton, will feature the premiere performance of William Schirmer's "Symphony No. 12," written especially for the ensemble. The concert is free.

PIANO CONCERT AT MAIN LIBRARY DOWNTOWN

Today's Intermezzo Sunday Concert in the Hicks Auditorium of the downtown library, 303 N. Laura St., will feature pianist Lawrence Quinnett, a doctoral candidate at Florida State University.

The free performance will be at 2:30 p.m.

JU SINGERS APPEARING AT GOOD SHEPHERD

The Chamber Music Society of Good Shepherd will present the Jacksonville University Singers under the direction of Timothy Snyder, performing a program of choral music including pieces by Samuel Barber and Benjamin Britten, at 6 p.m. today.

The concert, which is free, will be at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 1100 Stockton St.

BELLS TO RING AT CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY

The First Coast Ringers will perform at 3 p.m. today at the Church of the Epiphany, 5230 Harlow Blvd. The concert is free.

'CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD' AT LIMELIGHT

"Children of a Lesser God," Mark Medoff's play about a young deaf woman whose budding romance with a teacher is strained by his desire for her to learn to talk, opens Thursday at St. Augustine's Limelight Theatre.

All Thursday performances of the play, which runs through May 13, will be interpreted for the deaf. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through May 13, with a show at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24.

EASTER CANTATA IN PONTE VEDRA BEACH
