What Trophy Drought? Van Persie Completes the 'Double'

ROBIN VAN PERSIE has received more recognition for his stellar season after he was crowned Footballer of theYear today . The Arsenal captain was honoured by the Football Writers' Association only two days after being named PFA Player of the Year by his fellow professionals, appreciation of an outstanding campaign in which he has scored 34 goals in all competitions. Wayne Rooney finished second, with Manchester United team-mate Paul Scholes third and Fulham's Clint Dempsey fourth.

Van Persie is the third Arsenal player in the Premier League era, after Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry, to do the individual awards 'double', and this is the eighth time a Gunner has been chosen as Footballer of the Year. Joe Mercer, Frank McLintock, Robert Pires, Bergkamp and Henry (three times) are the other Arsenal players to take this trophy.

Rooney was the last man to claim both awards in 2010. David Ginola, Roy Keane, Teddy Sheringham and Cristiano Ronaldo have been similarly honoured, along with Bergkamp and Henry. …
