LONDONERS were today told to continue conserving water -- as dozens of flood warnings were issued across southern England.

Thames Water insisted its hosepipe ban would remain in force for the "foreseeable future" because the heavy rain will not ease the drought.

Today the Met Office warned that the sodden capital could expect the downpours to continue through most of May. The Environment Agency issued 21 flood alerts and eight flood warnings, all in the South-West, as a deep depression swept across the country. The Met Office said: "The public should take extra care and be aware heavy rain may lead to localised surface water flooding and poor driving conditions."

Heavy snow fell in the Scottish Highland, with ski resorts said to be enjoying the best conditions of the season. But Thames Water said: "It has taken two years to get into this drought and a couple of wet weeks won't get us out of it, though it is greatly appreciated. …
