CHRIS Cropper adapted best to the wet to win the Grafton Cycle Club's Mystery Handicap at Coutts Crossing on Saturday.

Junior rider Patrick Brennan finished second on corrected times, with Jye Reardon in third place.

Fifteen riders braved the challenging conditions and all started the 30km event together.

Handicaps had been secretly allocated to each rider and were deducted from their riding times at the end of the event.

With the A-grade riders determined to lead the way there were some early casualties from the bunch and a few riders endured a lonely and tough day riding in the rain.

During the first of three laps the leading bunch behaved rather civilly, with only the occasional flirtation off the front by Shaun Baxter, Aaron Watts, Greg Coombes and Dion Wilkes.

Craig Evers upped the tempo on the way past the shop on the third lap and his move ensured that the pace quickened.

Watts, Baxter, Wilkes and Reardon were among those to go as the bunch swung left on to Lower Kangaroo Creek Rd. …
