Richardson Penalty Enough to Sink Brave Team North

MICHAEL RICHARDSON struck the decisive penalty as Newcastle United reserves retained the Sage Northumberland Senior Cup last night.

The ex-Walker Central midfielder made it 4-2 in a spot-kick shoot-out, after the Toon's second string had been held 4-4 after extra time by STL Northern League Division Two champions Team Northumbria.

In normal time, Paul Dummett, Phil Airey (2) and Dan Taylor scored for United, Peter Watling, Tom Davies (2) and Daniel Riley for TN.

In the shoot-out, Graeme Cairns and Watling scored for TN, Christian Graham missed and Jak Alnwick saved from Riley. For United, Ryan Donaldson, Taylor and Greg McDermott scored before Richardson hit the winner. He said: "It was good to get the winner in the end but I don't think we should have let it get to penalties.

"We dominated the game and kept the ball really well for spells.

"If we'd been cuter around the box we'd have got in a few more times and got a few more goals. …
