Budget Steers Vital Highway Cash Our Way

IN a huge boost for the region's crumbling roads, tonight's Federal Budget will include much-needed funding for our busiest highways.

The Daily Mercury can exclusively announce $15.3million will be earmarked to complete the $50million upgrade of the Bruce Highway's southern approach to Mackay.

In making the announcement Treasurer Wayne Swan said the Labor Government had reaffirmed its commitment to building a better, safer Bruce Hwy.

C[pounds sterling]Under Labor, Federal investment in this road now stands at an unprecedented $2.8billion over seven years,C[yen] Mr Swan said.

C[pounds sterling]When compared to the former Howard Government's record, we're spending more than twice as much in half the time.C[yen]

The Federal Government is also delivering on an earlier commitment to undertake a major $120million upgrade of the Peak Downs Hwy.

Tonight's budget will provide a further $10million for this project. …
