THE North East Regional Championships were held at Sunderland with the finals being an excellent spectacle.

Rachael Wilson (Derwentside) returned to her winning ways in the breaststroke, taking all three titles. Wilson won the 100m event on Saturday in 1-10.51 and went on to take the 50m race on Sunday in 33.02.

Also on Sunday, the 200m breaststroke proved to be the closest race of them all with City of Newcastle's Jessica Thielmann swimming her best ever to go into the final in the fastest place with 2-39.41.

In the final, Wilson and Thielmann raced neck and neck, the more experienced Derwentside girl taking the title with 2-39.18.

City of Sunderland's Jonathan Carlisle was another triple gold medallist.

Carlisle won his specialist events, the 200m backstroke in 2-09.60 and the 100m event in 56.92, with club mate Adam Taylor taking the bronze in a time of 1-01.28.

Carlisle's third gold came in the 50m freestyle in a closelycontested race in 24.31 with Zak Dawson (City of Newcastle) just behind in 24.64.

Taylor did go on to strike gold himself in the 50m butterfly with 25.99.

Sam Munkley (City of Newcastle) did well to claim third in 26.59.

Munkley also finished third in the 100m butterfly with 58.52.

Phoebe Lenderyou (City of Newcastle) returned to competition in the 100m backstroke and stamped her authority on the race to win in 1-04.36 after taking bronze in the 400m individual medley with 5-00.96. Will Jolly (City of Newcastle) swam his best races of the season to take gold in the 1500m freestyle with 16-10.27.

Fifteen year-old Daniel Wheeler (City of Newcastle) came home third in a lifetime best of 16-49.76.

Jolly earlier claimed second place in the 400m freestyle with 4-06.49.

Amy Harris (Chester-le-St) won the 50m butterfly in 29. …
