Easing the flow

The $1.95 billion Ipswich Motorway was officially opened this week.

95,000 cars use the motorway each day.

Daily traffic on the motorway has increased by 25,000 cars over the last five years.

AS THE battle to attract the tourist dollar continues throughout south-east Queensland, Ipswich has found an unlikely drawcard grabbing the attention of day-trippers.

It is not the lush surrounds of the Scenic Rim, nor is it the artsy hub and cafe culture constantly evolving in the Top of Town.

If you are thinking more along the lines of half a million tonnes of bitumen, stretching between Dinmore and the outskirts of Brisbane you are on the right track.

It is the Ipswich Motorway and its tour, operated by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, which celebrated its 3000th visitor last week since the tours began in early 2010.

The lucky 3000th visitor was one of the 36 people in a tour group organised by Val Malynn of the Camira Friends and Neighbours group. …
