USFL IS COMING BACK

The ABA came back in a much, much smaller form as a basketball league. Now another sport's defunct league from a previous generation is using an old acronym for a new league.

The USFL is apparently coming back in March 2013, with eight franchises playing a 14-game schedule through June. This business model - which has some decent backing from legitimate investors (such as Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff) and former NFL executives on its board of directors - does not plan to compete against the NFL at all, but simply sees itself as a developmental league.

"We will play in markets where there are no NFL teams or major league baseball teams," said CEO Jaime Cuadra to the Associated Press. "It's a league for guys who are on the bubble for making NFL teams, and we will have complete open access for the NFL. We want to build a model that is sustainable."

No Florida or Georgia cities are reportedly under consideration for franchises.
