17th Hole Easier, but It Still Takes Toll on Some; Wind a Factor as Laird, O'Hair, Simpson and Glover Run into Trouble

The par-3 17th hole at the TPC Sawgrass Players Stadium Course played a bit easier in the second round than in the first.

The hole still took its measure of enough players Friday to send some home early and knock Martin Laird out of the lead.

Although the back-center hole placement might be the most favorable of the four tournament rounds, the players had a cross-wind most of the day, making club selection tricky.

The hole also played 148 yards, the longest the players will have all week.

There were 11 balls hit into the water Friday, seven fewer than the first round. The hole averaged 3.058, down from the 3.134 in the first round.

However, the balls that were hit into the water obviously did more damage because the second round is the difference between playing on the weekend and slamming trunks in the parking lot.

Doused tee shots sent Sean O'Hair, Webb Simpson and Lucas Glover home early.

They all finished at 2 over par, with O'Hair and Simpson making double bogeys and Glover making a bogey. …
