Stallions Roll to Region Title; Favre Throws Two-Hitter to helpProvidence Reach State Semifinals

Providence pitcher Zach Favre admittedly wasn't at his best Friday.

He sure could've fooled Gainesville P.K. Yonge.

Favre took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for a two-hit performance in a 7-1 rout of the visiting Blue Wave in the Region 1-3A baseball final. It sends the Stallions back to the state semifinals for the first time since 2009, where they'll face Tampa Prep on Wednesday in Port St. Lucie.

If the Stallions (25-5) continue getting so-so pitching performances with stat lines like the one Favre turned in against the Blue Wave, they should feel pretty comfortable going forward.

"We haven't gotten there yet, but I really, really want a state championship," Favre said. "I felt pretty good, but my arm didn't really loosen up today. It definitely wasn't my 'A' game. Probably a 'B' game."

Providence had a relatively tame day offensively from the heart of its lineup, but did enough in two innings to give Favre a cushion that he never came close to losing. He wasn't overpowering, striking out just five, but had command of all of his pitches from open to close.

Favre (9-0) got off to somewhat of a delayed start in 2012, working his way back from an ankle injury, then found himself in the thick of a stellar Providence pitching rotation. Coach Mac Mackiewitz said that the best thing about the Stallions is their depth on the mound, with some combination of Favre, Walker Lockett and Tyler Martin able to step into the No. 1 spot.

Through three playoff games, that trio has been dominant.

Martin pitched a one-hitter against Tallahassee Maclay in the opener, and Lockett went 6 1/3 innings and struck out 12 on Tuesday against North Florida Christian. …
