STATE OF PLAY

QBL women: Ipswich Force 91 (Nadeen Payne 22, Emma Langford 17, Courtney Taylor 13) def South West Metro Pirates 47 (Maddy Wiley 10, Kalani Purcell 10).

QBL men: Ipswich Force 93 (Zarryon Fereti 30, Shaun Gleeson 23, Ryan Jefferies 14) def South West Metro Pirates 78 (Robert Lippman 17, Kenneth Barnes 17, Nathan Niesler 14).

LATE in Saturday night's game against the Ipswich Force, South West Metro guard Maddy Wiley trudged to the bench with head bowed. She was completely demoralised.

Her team had just conceded their 39th turnover, an average of one a-minute, and Wiley Co like most of her teammates Co just wanted it to be over.

The Pirates had become the second victim of a suffocating Ipswich Force defence that will destroy many more teams in the QBL this season.

A 40 minute full-court-press led to an incredible 20 steals and a match-winning 39 points from turnovers in the Force's comfortable 91-47 win at Ipswich Basketball Stadium.

A lightning-quick set of defensively-minded guards was the key to coach Brad George's bold plan.

Twins Courtney and Jessica Taylor, Marney Lee and Natasha Hasse Co whose Inspector Gadget-like arms led to a personal tally of 10 steals Co chased, harassed and double-teamed their opponents into submission.

The quartet also added 36 points at the offensive end, providing valuable support to WNBL forwards Nadeen Payne (22 points) and Emma Langford (17), who both looked a class above their opponents.

Langford, Payne, Lauren O'Sullivan and a swathe of bench players also pushed forward on the second line of defence often leaving the Pirates no passing options.

With two solid wins built on the aggressive defensive style to start the season, George was pleased with the early season signs.
