Brides Relive the Big Day; Two Decades of Wedding Fashion on Show

FROM meringue dresses to Grecian gowns, an array of blushing brides showcased decades of wedding fashion.

To celebrate 20 years of wedding receptions at Dissington Hall, near Ponteland, Northumberland, 20 former brides donned their white dresses to toast the landmark anniversary.

More than 1,000 couples have tied the knot at the stately home since 1992 and yesterday some of them took a step back in time to relive their nuptials.

Gill Brown, who owns the grade II-listed Georgian mansion with husband Michael and whose own wedding reception was the very first to be held there, said: "It's fascinating to see the changes in bridal fashion over the years - from the white, meringue-style confections of the 90s to the streamlined column dresses that started to become popular with the dawn of the new Millennium.

"What makes Dissington Hall really special is that we turn it over completely to wedding parties for their special day. We don't do conveyor belt weddings - if you have your wedding here then for that day the hall is yours and yours alone.

"As a result of that, the couples who hire it feel like family to us - it's been lovely to see some of our former brides again."

One of the women who agreed to squeeze back into her wedding dress to help Dissington celebrate was Paula Eilbeck, of Seaham, County Durham. The 30-year-old married partner Robert, also 30, in 2009 and they decided to hold their reception at the hall after falling for its exclusivity and impressive surroundings.

The part-time teacher said: "I liked the fact we were able to have it all to ourselves unlike other hotels where there are four or five weddings on the same day.

"The day was beautiful, the sun was shining so we had use of the whole outside as well.

"That's why I was really keen to get involved with this event and I wanted to put my wedding dress on again. …
