Mining Harming Land, Communities, Says Book

TOWNS like Moranbah, Dysart and Collinsville have been shoved into the spotlight with the publication of the non-fiction book Rich Land, Wasteland.

The book, written by Sharyn Munro, highlights the effects the mining industry is having on communities, including towns within the Bowen Basin.

As a mother and grandmother, Ms Munro said she was fed up with the pollution and harmful social effects the mining companies were causing.

C[pounds sterling]For research, I jumped on a plane and I flew to Mackay... I spent time in Bowen and visited Dysart and Moranbah,C[yen] Ms Munro said.

What she found, she describes as shocking. C[pounds sterling]These communities are really hurting,C[yen] she said.

She spent time with graziers who were claiming the open-cut mines were diverting flood water onto and away from their properties. She also tagged FIFO families as C[pounds sterling]fractured familiesC[yen]. …
