ADAM CRAGG walked into a disappointed home dressing room at Jesmond yesterday - and liked what he saw.

Northumberland are out of the Minor Counties Knockout Trophy after their 35-run defeat to Cambridgeshire. But seeing how badly defeat hurt his new-look side encouraged the captain.

"All the players were gutted afterwards, which was nice," said Cragg. "We've lost our two games but I think we've really improved on last year.

"We're a unit and the lads we brought in want to play - it wasn't a case of dragging people off the streets and asking if they fancied a game for Northumberland."

Northumberland included three debutants - Lee Whitfield, Graham Cessford and Gary Johnson - and three Durham youngsters - Rammy Singh, Ryan Pringle and Ben Raine.

Cessford was expensive, going for 72 in 10 overs.

But new-ball partner Johnson did well, bowling the first 10 overs from the Osborne Avenue End. Raine bowled a tidy line and Pringle might have won the game had he been able to hang around for more than 35. …
