Death Sentence Was Just a Bad Mistake

THE story of Graeme Johnson in today's paper sends a shudder through my soul.

It is hard to even begin to imagine what the six days were like when he was left to ponder his death.

He was lying in a hospital bed battling pneumonia when his doctor walked in, saying he was going to be straight with him.

aYou are in major trouble'' was the message he gave Graeme revealing that his x-rays clearly showed he had advanced cancer.

A nurse at the hospital came to his bedside early the next morning and comforted the 59-year-old explaining sympathetically what he could expect as far as treatment went.

Graeme asked her the tough questions and she answered honestly and while devastated, he was grateful for her companionship on that first lonely night.

Although still weak he discharged himself from hospital the next morning to go and break the bad news to his closest friends.

Like Graeme they were also in shock.

Looking a friend in the eye and telling them you may soon die is something everyone prays they will never have to do. …
