SURFING: Sunshine Coast surfer Mitch Coleborn has been eliminated following the opening round of the 6-star Quiksilver Saquarema Prime in Rio de Janeiro.

Coleborn finished third in his opening-round heat with a score of 11.57, behind Reunion Island's Adrien Toyon (14.60) and fellow Aussie Matt Wilkinson (12.33).

Defending champion Kai Otton, of Australia, was a standout on day one, winning his round of 96 heat at Itauna Beach.

His score of 13.76 was enough to see off Brazil's Hizunome Bettero (12.50) and Ruda Carvalho (6.26) and Hawaii's Kiron Jabour (10.50).
