NISSAN will add a new sedan variant to its city car line-up in August, before the long-awaited Pulsar model arrives just a few months after.

The new Almera sedan is based on the diminutive Micra small hatch, but is actually considerably larger than that car a and almost as big as a Mazda3.

The Almera measures up at 4.42m long a 64.5cm longer than the hatchback and just 15.5cm shorter than a Mazda3 sedan.

Its natural rivals include other segment straddling small sedans such as the recently revitalised Honda City (from $18,490 plus on-road costs), Hyundai's Accent (from $16,990), Ford's Fiesta (from $18,990), Kia's Rio (from $19,690) and Holden's Barina (from $16,490).

Toyota is also expected to introduce a new Yaris sedan later this year.

The Almera is expected to be priced below the outgoing Tiida small sedan and hatch, which starts at $18,990 plus on-road costs.

Nissan Australia managing director and CEO Bill Peffer insists the car is anot a Micra sedana. …
