IT HAD to end in disaster.

Despite all things malus communis (look it up) having failed me in some way already, and promising never to purchase anything with a small C[pounds sterling]iC[yen] in front of a misplaced capital again, I've bought an iPad.

Fearing I would single-handedly hasten the demise of print media worldwide, after a brief period of ownership it is now obvious this will not happen.

Okay, this is redolent of the manager who rejected The Beatles, Richard Rowe, saying the guitar band's days were numbered.

But once you get over your belly laughs, Rowe did sign a few others of note: The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, The Moody Blues, The Animals, Tom Jones and The Small Faces among others, most of whom are still going. The Beatles lasted a mere nine years.

Newspapers are still going, too, and will continue.

Yes, despite claims from early computing soothsayers that by 1985 paper itself would be worthless, cinemas would die, robots would clean our houses, drive us around, steal our women, do our accounting and basically save so much time everyone would lead leisurely lives in gardens of Eden, alas the reality is somewhat different. …
