GATESHEAD Thunder are in the capital tomorrow striving to overcome the same opposition who provided their last league victory an alarming 26 months ago.

Thunder's 24-18 triumph at London Skolars in March 2010 was the last time they were on the right side of a score-line in league action.

Kevin Neighbour, long since retired as a player and now installed as head coach, was among their tryscorers that day.

He now has the task of mentally preparing his charges to end a run of 55 competitive matches without a win, barring two Challenge Cup runouts against amateur opponents. Working in his favour could be the fact that Skolars presented Thunder with their closest shave last season, when the teams played out a to-and-fro 32-32 draw in London.

The capital club are once again among the lower reaches of the Cooperative Championship One table, winning just one of their six games.

In fact, the standings have a depressingly familiar look to them as all four expansion teams - those from outside of the traditional rugby league heartland - occupy the bottom four positions. …
