BALLINA coach Craig Beare paid tribute to the referee in his side's 29-26 win over Southern Cross University in the Far North Coast rugby union premiership at Quays Reserve on Saturday.

Beare said the match was decided on its merit and not influenced by the whistle-blower, Karl Lupton, who blew just six penalties in the close match.

aIt was close at half-time (15-14) and close at full-time,a Beare said.

aBest refereeing performance of the season, three penalties all, for the whole game.

aHe let the game flow ... it wasn't a great spectacle.

aRefereeing so far has this season been bordering on appalling but on Saturday Karl Lupton was really, really good.
