TYNESIDE-based Ethiopian athlete Yared Hagos was in record-breaking form in the Raby Castle 10k.

Taking in the scenic run in the picturesque grounds in preparation for a tilt at the Blaydon Race in two weeks time, the Wallsend signing was quickly into his stride with his target of dipping under the course record of 31min 14secs set in 2008 by Morpeth's Martin Scaife.

Leading the near 400-strong field from the off, Hagos was mor than 100 metres clear at the completion of the first kilometre.

By midway, reached in 14min 43secs, the gap over secondplaced James Bulman (New Marske) was around 90 seconds.

Despite a number of steep inclines, Hagos continued his surge and, though he slowed slightly during the second circuit, came home in 30:16, 58 seconds inside the old figures.

The African was all smiles after his victory, saying: "I was pleased to win.

"It would have been nice to break 30 minutes but as it is quite a testing course will all the hills then I am not disappointed. …
