ONE of the Northern Rivers' most popular New Year's Eve events has been cancelled.

Alstonville Apex's New Year's Eve Family Festival has been held at the Alstonville Showgrounds for the past seven years.

Last year it attracted more than 3000 people.

But organisers have made the difficult decision to cancel this year's event.

Ballina Shire B Ward councillor, David Wright, said he was devastated by the news that the festival had been cancelled.

aI can completely understand where they (the organisers) are coming from,a he said.

aBut we would have done anything we could to save it.

aThe festival has just been so popular a not only with the Alstonville community, but for people from right across the Northern Rivers.

aIt's been a great event for families.a

Cr Wright admitted that the council's financial contribution of $10,000 for this year's event was aless than what they asked fora, but said the main reason for it being cancelled was the potential for the event to run at a loss. …
