ANCIENT history was brought to life for 10-year-old Harriet Marshall in her back garden.

Harriet was helping her mum with a spot of digging when she unearthed a 160-million-year-old fossil.

Harriet, a pupil at Park Head Primary School from Winlaton, Gateshead, has always been interested in rocks and crystals but had never seen anything like it.

And, after a spot of internet research, Harriet was convinced she'd uncovered something special.

But it was only when her family consulted experts that they learned how rare Harriet's find actually was.

Mum Claire, 46, said: "We handed it in to the Great North Museum because at first we thought it might be a dinosaur's tooth.

"Then we found out it is actually part of the inside of a squid or cuttlefish-type creature that lived in the sea around 160 million years ago.

These are a common find in the south of the country but the lady at the museum was puzzled as to how it came to be in our back garden as they have only been found as far North as Yorkshire. …
