Racing Manager Silent on Why Race Was Abandoned

Article excerpt

HORSE RACING: I don't subscribe to the theory that silence is golden.

Maybe Racing Queensland Limited's TAB Thoroughbred Racing manager Brent Leisemann does.

He has not replied to my email relating to last week's Racing Around, when three days earlier he abandoned a Rockhampton race after five horses had been declared to start.

Last week's column detailed the case against the abandonment, making it clear that the race should have been run.

I had attempted to contact Leisemann before writing the column and even provided him with an opportunity to balance the story and present the reasoning for his decision in today's column.

Last Friday morning I sent him the following email:

C[pounds sterling]Hi Brent,

As a courtesy I am enclosing the Racing Around column published in The Morning Bulletin, Rockhampton, today. I rang to ascertain why you abandoned the race in question so as to balance the story. As such I welcome your response to this column, as I have made my feelings on the decision well known in this piece. I intend to follow up on this matter in Racing Around next Friday, in which I will publish this email offering you the opportunity to reply. Kind Regards, Tony McMahon.C[yen]

RQL, like so many organisations, subscribes to a business that provides C[pounds sterling]media intelligence and press monitoringC[yen] on articles pertaining to its industry.

I have been in the RQL offices when one of its officials has pulled up on media monitors my Racing Around column published in that morning's The Morning Bulletin.

Therefore, I didn't even have to send Brent a copy of the column, because in all likelihood he would have already read it. Anyway, I did so as a courtesy and for whatever reason he has chosen not to respond.

Considering Leisemann has replied previously and vigorously when I have taken either he or RQL to task, there is only one conclusion that can be reached about his decision to abandon last Thursday week's race. …
