THE Ned Kelly has a tough battle to keep its crown when it takes on dozens of tasty competitors battling for Pick of the Valley Pies in this year's Daily Examiner reader poll.

After winning the accolade last year, the manager of the Aussie Pie Shack Darrel Perry is baking twice as many of his bacon-and-egg-filled Ned Kellys to keep up with demand.

aWe have got a great chance again this year. The beef and gravy and chicken gravy, the customers just get enough of them,a he said.

His chunky steak and chicken mornay will also take some beating, he said.

aThe secret is to keep them fresh. We bake and prepare everything on the premises by hand,a he said.

But competitors abound and the newly opened Pie and the Pea in Yamba also fancies its chances by dazzling customers with more than 25 different flavours according to manager Bronwyn Mark.

Thai green curry, scallop mornay, butter chicken together with the pork and cognac cream sauce pies are all real contenders, she said. …
