WHEN yesterday's council meeting came to an end after 42 minutes, my first thought was I expected it to be longer.

It was the first meeting of the new Mackay Regional Council and there were several items on the agenda up for discussion.

I asked new mayor-elect Deirdre Comerford if she planned to follow in her predecessor's footsteps and run council like a business.

She said her approach would be to take a business-like manner but the time a meeting took was irrelevant.

C[pounds sterling]I'll take as long as it needs to take to do the discussions that are necessary,C[yen] Cr Comerford told me. C[pounds sterling]I'm not obsessed with having short meetings.

C[pounds sterling]We can have indicative timeframes we might think a meeting will go for but if it goes longer that's perfectly okay and if it goes shorter that's okay too.C[yen]

Her interaction with the other councillors was smooth, and she took the time to praise them on stepping up to the challenge, taking on a rural portfolio as well as a council portfolio. …
