A TEESSIDE woman accused of smuggling pounds 1.6m of cocaine into Bali says she acted to protect her son.

Lindsay Sandiford, originally from Redcar but living in India with partner Shiva Ram for the past five years, claims she didn't know what was in a suitcase she agreed to carry into Bali.

But while she realised it was "something dodgy", she says she did it because her youngest son Elliot, 21, was being threatened by a drugs gang.

Bali customs officers say the pounds 1.6m cocaine haul was found in the lining of her suitcase.

But Mrs Sandiford is reported as saying: "I knew what they were asking me to do was something dodgy.

"They weren't asking me to bring in tulips or balls of cheese but I didn't know if it was money, gold, jewellery, guns, marijuana or heroin. I had no idea."

She told a Sunday newspaper her problems began when police found a drugs factory near where Elliot was living.

Her son, she says, was suspected of being a police informant and she was told by the gang he would be killed "if I didn't put things right". …
