DESPERATE trawler operators at Ballina are aputting themselves in dangera by crossing the bar in bad conditions, says the general manager of the fishermen's co-op.

The bar of the Richmond River is one of the most dangerous on the coast, with a large number of capsizes and incidents in the past.

Commercial boats are now struggling to get out to sea more than 60 days of the year.

Ballina Fishermen's Co-op general manager Phil Hilliard has had enough and has called on the NSW Government to finalise the report into the dredging of the bar.

He says people will be killed unless the work is done.

Members of the Ballina dredging taskforce have been told the report into dredging the bar will be released by early April.

A report on dredging of the trawler harbour is also due at the end of April.

aThe report is well overdue,a Mr Hilliard said.
