Giving Birth Was a Wonderful Experience

CHILDBIRTH is not an experience many women will imagine or recall as a time of peace and tranquillity.

But for first-time mum Elisabeth Payne she could not have been more relaxed for the birth of her son, Jackson.

The 35-year-old's labour was calm and controlled thanks to the technique HypnoBirthing, which teaches mums to fight the fear of childbirth and instead think positive, practice relaxation and breathing techniques to do during the birth.

The overall aim is to give the mother control of the process, and trust in her innate, instinctive ability to birth her baby. Correctly practiced, the system provides a calmer and easier birth.

For Elisabeth and husband Taylor, 30, a music lecturer, the water birth of their son a year ago was "the most wonderful" and calm experience of their lives.

"I was nervous for the birth of Jackson as he was my first child and I'd heard so many horror stories about labour," explained Elisabeth, a hand sewing specialist, from South Shields.

"When I was told about HypnoBirthing I was sceptical, but I thought it couldn''t hurt to give it a go.

"As it turned out I found the classes very informative and useful. I thought I'd feel silly practicing the relaxation techniques I was taught, but that wasn't the case.

"I felt myself letting go of all the tensions of the outside world and each time I came away from a class I felt more and more relaxed and ready to give birth.

"When the time actually came, I put into practice the techniques I''d been taught, listened to my body and the relief I felt when I regained control was amazing. Because of my relaxed state of mind, the only pain relief I needed was gas and air.

"Giving birth to my son was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. There was no screaming and shouting, just a feeling of total calmness. …
