Get Ready for a Big Wowser

Article excerpt

TWO national boxing squads are coming to Tyneside for what is being billed as the 2012 Wowser Weekender.

The Tyne, Tees and Wear Association are putting out their Lonsdale Lions to take on the Spanish senior national squad at Gateshead College on Saturday, June 23 and the following afternoon the Area juniors face Holland's top kids.

"It'll be the greatest weekend of amateur boxing ever seen in the North East," insisted Area treasurer Davey Newth. "We're all excited at the prospect of it in Olympic year."

The Spanish and Dutch invasion will mark the start of an intensive plan to put North East amateur boxing on an international stage.

"We intend to have a long-term relationship with both Spain and the Netherlands," Newth told me. "We even aim to have joint training camps.

"Some people have moaned that we up here in the North East aren't recognised by London but it's no good just complaining about things. I prefer to be proactive which is why we're making such ambitious plans."

The squads for the twoday extravaganza will feature top local fighters like GB star Lawrence Osueke from Rye Hill, Forest Hall's national finalist Lewis Ritson, and Jamie Humble of North Benwell. Spain are bringing two Olympic stars - European silver and bronze medallist Kelvin de la Nieve and Jonathan Alonso.

The Association are seeking sponsors to back their international weekend.

It costs pounds 100 a bout or two businesses can double up at pounds 50 each. Tickets are priced at pounds 15 per day or pounds 20 for the two events.

Sponsorship and event tickets can be obtained through Dave Newth on 0191 284 5279 or 07535 063 450.

? ALNWICK are to have a new amateur boxing club which is to be opened by the Duchess of Northumberland on Friday, June 22 at 4pm.
