First Meeting Has Ups and Downs

THERE was a stuttering start and a battle of the sexes at Toowoomba Regional Council's first ordinary meeting of the new term.

Councillors were asked to decide on the extent of increases to the Planning and Development Group's fees and charges for the start of the next financial year.

They had deferred the decision from committee meetings so they could have more time to discuss it.

Despite the additional week, councillors yesterday remained divided.

On the advice of CEO Ken Gouldthorp, they agreed to adjourn the meeting for 15 minutes so they could come to a consensus.

When they returned , the way forward was no clearer.

Planning and Development Committee chairman Cr Bill Cahill argued that fees and charges should not be increased from July 1 until a full review was completed.

That is not due until October.
