MACKAY residents have stepped up to help the Australian Red Cross in their time of need.

Blood stocks have been running low in Mackay especially due to the cold and flu season.

Australian Red Cross Blood Service community relations officer Pippa Peach said as a way to boost supplies the centre was opened yesterday although it was a public holiday.

C[pounds sterling]Today (yesterday) we had 30 people donate,C[yen] Ms Peach said. C[pounds sterling]We've also had 10 new donors. Historically Mackay has been reactive when people see we need blood.

C[pounds sterling]We have 1.3 days left of O negative and 1.4 days left of O positive.C[yen]

Ms Peach said regular donors had had to cancel their appointments.

C[pounds sterling]Regular donors can't donate when they're sick,C[yen] she said. C[pounds sterling]So it does affect blood stocks. Other centres are doing their bit to try to get more donors. …
