A NEW national campaign urging the Federal Government to legislate on the recomm-endations from the Gonski Review was launched this week.

The Australian Education Union says implementing recommendations would essentially mean an additional $1500 per public school student per year.

Called aI give a Gonskia, the new campaign involves grass roots community activity from teachers and par- ents and calls for legislation by year end.

Byron Bay High School principal Peter King said it could potentially mean an extra $1.2million for his school.

aWe've got 830 students and if we had an extra $1500 per student, there is a lot we could do,a he said.

aGeneral mainten- ance for the school for a start, because it's 25 years old now.

aWe could also employ additional staff.

Mr King said he was acautiously optimistica about the Gonski recommendations being taken on board by the Government.
