GLAMOROUS Grafton may not catch on as the city's next marketing campaign, but it is a way to describe the place for, at the very least, one special week in July.

The July carnival is the pinnacle of country NSW racing, with five meetings over 10 days and a raft of other events and activities to make a winter trip to the Clarence Valley worth a punt.

The prelude Westlawn Cup Day kicks off the July Racing Carnival on Thursday, July 5 but its Ladies Day on Sunday July 8 that I hang my hat on.

Think fashion. Forget Melbourne and Sydney (brrr), and instead enjoy sunny days trackside at the Clarence River Jockey Club where there is almost $12,000 worth of fashion prizes to be won over three competition days.

While it warms up during the day, those ladies (or even gents and kids) with their eyes on the fashion stakes should, of course, still dress a la mode winter: stockings, covered shoulders and winter hats.

And the competition is fierce, especially on Ladies Day, where judges will be searching for those, very much on trend. …
