SOUTH Africa and the moon could hold the secrets to predicting the weather.

A number of Boonah farmers have taken to looking to the heavens and the African peninsula to predict what will happen in Queensland.

Bunjurgen Estate Vineyard owner David McMaugh has saved two crops from being washed out by basing his grape harvesting on weather patterns around South Africa.

aI've had some luck with it,a he said.

aI've been able to get two crops off that would have been devastated by the weather.a

Mr McMaugh said he used a number of websites to view the weather and worked out how long it would take for it to make its way to the Scenic Rim.

aSome people think I'm a bit eccentric, but this has saved me at least two crops from rain.a

In 2010 Mr McMaugh said he managed to get his crop of grapes off the vines a matter of hours before the heaviest rain of the year.

Similarly earlier this year, Bunjurgen managed to harvest a crop when a number of other producers in the area suffered significant crop losses with the weather. …
