A HOAX call for help led dozens of emergency service crews on a wild-goose chase yesterday, costing more than $20,000.

Nine police officers from three Sunshine Coast districts, an AGL Action Rescue Helicopter crew from Bundaberg and an ambulance crew spent several hours searching bushland near Dunethin Rock for what was thought to be a missing man.

The prank cost the helicopter service, which flew for almost five hours, $4500 each hour they spent in the air.

Sunshine Coast Water Police Sergeant Kyle Bates said it was an expensive and disrespectful act.

aUnfortunately we have to respond to calls for help and when hoax calls come through they don't usually last all day,a Sgt Bates said.

Crews responded after a man was heard screaming amaydaya through a muffled community radio channel at 9am.

The man indicated he had crashed near Yandina-Bli Bli Rd and his car was in a creek.

A second radio call recorded the man saying he was in adesperatea need of care.

Police called on the rescue helicopter to help in the search, as well as police crews from Coolum, Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast Dog Squad. …
