Good News from USA Boosts Index

THE FTSE 100 Index started the day in positive territory yesterday. Good economic news from the US and a strong open on Wall Street saw the UK Index edge higher. The FTSE 100 Index closed at 5523.9, up 77.0 points.

Large cap bank Standard Chartered yesterday gave a trading update. First-half revenue is expected to have grown by high single digits, which is in line with management expectations. It has managed costs robustly and margins have improved.

Wholesale banking operations performed better than its retail operations, reflecting the uncertainty caused by the eurozone crisis.

Investors responded positively to the update and pushed the bank's shares up 3.1% to 1375p. It also plans to hire more than 1,000 people.

Northgate led the North Index. Its share price rose an impressive 17.1% to 209.375p after it announced its full-year results. The commercial vehicle hire company is based in Darlington and has operations both here in the UK and in Spain. …
