ACCC Sets Up Hotline to Report Businesses That Make False Claims

BUSINESSES that put up their prices from July 1 and blame the carbon tax should expect to get a aplease explaina from Australia's consumer watchdog.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's role will be to inform and educate businesses and consumers about their rights and obligations under the Competition and Consumer Act and to take enforcement action where required to ensure compliance with the law.

Basically, it will be the ACCC's job to stop businesses profiteering from the implementation of the carbon tax.

The ACCC has set up a Carbon Price Claims hotline (1300 303 609) and online carbon price claim form to make it easier for consumers and businesses to complain if they suspect false price claims are being made about the carbon price.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims said he was concerned aconsumers may be duped into accepting a price increase for a product or service because of the carbon price, when the carbon price is actually not the causea. …
