A COMMUNITY church for Teessiders may soon see parishioners pulling up pews at a former bar after planning permission was approved.

The green light has been given for Amazing! Grace Church to turn a disused pub at Teesside Park into a place of worship.

The group submitted its planning application to Middlesbrough Council regarding the vacant building, formerly known as The Academy, in May.

The bar, which is based on the far east of the Leisure Park next to the Gala Casino, has been vacant since 2000.

In its application, the Amazing! Grace Church said the building would become a "place of worship with community engagement activities".

It has now been given the go-ahead, with the council approval reading: "The change of use from bar to place of worship will not have a detrimental impact on the amenity of any adjoining or nearby property.

"It will not prejudice the appearance of the area and it does not significantly affect any landscaping nor prevent safe access to the building. …
