TRAINS, rally cars and Rabbitohs made for unlikely bedfellows during an at-times heated debate at Thursday night's council meeting.

Councillors Jenny Bonfield, Bill Palmer and Keith Rhoades lodged a rescission motion against a decision at the last meeting to allocate $50,000 from the Evironmental Levy to a study into the potential of rail, both passenger and freight, including the harbour and shipping.

Cr Bonfield argued that the allocation was not within the parameters of the environmental levy and would be ineffective.

In arguing against the rescission, Cr Mark Graham said the idea of the allocation was to attract seed funding, draw attention to transport issues locally, and position the council as showing leadership.

aBetter transport planning and integrating rail, road and even a working port, is in the best environmental interests of the city,a Cr Graham said. …
