Carbon Tax as Important as Floating Aussie Dollar

SUNDAY brought with it some big changes to the way Australians live.

The one on everybody's lips is, of course, the carbon tax. Is it going to be the precursor to total economic mayhem as Coalition leader Tony Abbot proclaims?

Or is it going to make little or no difference to the cost of living for 99% of us once government giveaways are accounted for, as Minister Greg Combet says?

It is not a tax grab, he says. It is designed to encourage our big polluters to change methodology and find ways to reduce their liability for the tax.

According to Dr Keith Suter, well-known economic and social commentator and author, carbon pricing is the biggest change since the GST.

But it is more important. It ranks with the floating of the Australian dollar by Hawke and Keating in the 1980s Co the beginning of the end of tariff barriers protecting Australian industry and a step towards the C[pounds sterling]free tradeC[yen] economy we now have. Despite his tub-thumping, there is no more likelihood of Abbot in government dismantling carbon pricing than there was of a Coalition government reversing the floated dollar, according to Suter. …
