THE Sunshine Coast's beaches could be worth hundreds of millions a year to the local community, according to an expert.

And determining what that value is could help preserve them for future generations.

Launching a study aimed at putting a dollar value on our beaches, Bond University senior research assistant Dave Anning said a similar study on the Gold Coast had valued its beaches at $365 million a year.

aWe've spoken to a lot of tourists and obviously they're saying the beaches are a big drawcard,a Mr Anning said.

aThey say the state of beaches in Queensland is why they come here.

aWe want to ensure what are appropriate levels of investment so our beaches are here for our children and our children's children.a

Feedback on Sunshine Coast beaches had so far has been positive, he said.

aPeople on the beach say it's managed pretty well. They think council's doing a good job.a

The two-year, $700,000 beach study will also consider how the value of our beaches could be affected by adverse events such as natural disasters and coastal erosion related to climate change. …
